Footwear Adhesive: Superglue in footwear industry
Manufacturing footwear involves dealing with diversity of materials ranging from Natural rubber to Polyurethane and Synthetic fabrics. To finally achieve permanent bonds in our shoes we need to understand & accept a solution that accomplishes the deed effortlessly. We have come a long way since our ancestors started using bitumen to bond their spear-heads to the spear. TodaySuper Glue is the most popular choicebecause of its ability to bond permanently in a small amount of time. But wait a minute! What is this super glue? And how is it able to achieve such perfect bonds so conveniently?
Super glue is a synthetic resin from Cyanoacrylate (or C.A.) family of adhesives, which illustrates the newest and strongest of modern glues. They are made from synthetic polymers, a complex molecule made up of smaller and simpler molecules called monomers. These reactive monomers are separated from polymer molecules and when applied they create strong structural bonds because of their natural impulse to form polymeric chains. Once this reaction is catalyzed, it is almost impossible to stop. It works on a variety of substances and not to our surprise – Rubber& leather.
Most glues form microscopic eyes and hooks (like in a Velcro) that grab onto each other, so the more you use the better the bond. Whereasin case of polymers, it is the attributes of electromagnetic force that makes them work -Although a sizeable amount of one substance will electronically repel another, two atoms of different substance placed in very close proximity will exert a mutually attractive force. This is why we don’t need a lot of it for considerably heavy-duty jobs as well.We do not ‘completely’ understand how a superglue bonds, and yet even small quantities of it are useful for almost infinite number of repairs.Obviously, C.A.s becamerelevant in industries. They saved a lot of space and brought other costs down too.
Footwearindustryalso needed a more effective bonding solution to paste uppers to the soles than just riveting them. And it did not take long for major players to adoptsuper glue, especially the manufacturers of athletic shoes.Even with such a sophisticated method to bond these two parts, most of the customer complaints account to soles ripping off too early. Most of us know the harsh reality of flimsy joints in shoes too well. It is a major cause of return and repair requests.A challenge most manufacturers struggle to combat till date. The reason is prettysimple; yearsafter the commercial inception of Eastman #910 (Kodak’s version of super glue) there are not enough companies that offer specialized instant adhesives or super glues. Most suppliers market their standard super glue as ‘best’ and ‘fit for all purposes’ just to get those few early commercial clients. For added durability, different projects demand different viscosity, temperature, tensile strength, and gap the glue fills.
Here at Glue Farm, we manufacture industrial grade instant adhesives called ‘Dbond’ for our commercial customers. However the chemical composition of all instant adhesives is same, different offerings of Dbond are engineered to match different industrial needs. For instance, the GF 9403 Instant Adhesive is idealfor customers who do not have sophisticated ventilation attheir facility because it has limited odor and blooming capacity. This is good for the health of workers and it helps adhering to emission laws too. This is just a glimpse! Whether you are manufacturing footwear for your designers or consumers, our friendly staff will be happy to help and recommend just the right adhesive for your needs.
